FINC 351 — Introduction to Insurance

The main objective of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge about fundamental issues in insurance. These include the development of insurance, the ability to explain the concept of insurance and to distinguish this from similar institutions. Insurance will also be examined within the general framework of the risk management process. This course also aims at examining the insurance market, including those determinant factors which impact on the behaviour of the market participants. Specific topics include: the History of Insurance, the Concept of Insurance, Microand Macro-economic Functions of Insurance, Insurance as an Instrument of Risk Management, Insurance Markets and Competition, Control and Supervision of Insurance, Insurance Companies, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Insurance Concerns and Insurance Cartels.
