UGRC 239 — SOCIAL FRAMEWORKS OF DEVELOPMENT

Course Description This course examines the social dimensions of rural development by critically investigating development theories and how they impact on different social groups. Development theories claim to be based on technical considerations, expertise and blueprints. However they are often built on biases that create winners and losers and marginalize some sectors of society. The course examines the changing frameworks of development over time, the strengths and weaknesses of various development theories, and the frameworks they use to analyse African societies. The course also examines various tensions and interests in development theories and policies including tensions between developed and developing countries within a globalised framework; urban and rural interests; peasant farmers and commercial farmers within a national framework; and between youth and elders, and males and females within the local community context. It also examines the tensions between the economic and social objectives of development.
