MTEN 203 — Kinetic Processes & Surface Phenomenon
Materials Science and Engineering · University of Ghana
(Prerequisite: FAEN 115, 105) Serves as an introduction to basic kinetic processes in materials, develops basic mathematical skills necessary for materials research etc. Fundamentals of diffusion, kinetics of reaction including nucleation, growth and phase transformations are discussed. Some topics to be discussed include Field and Gradient, Driving Forces and flux for diffusion, irreversible thermodynamics, Diffusion processes, Kinetics and equilibrium theory, Nucleation and Growth Processes; homogenous and heterogenous nucleation, Nucleation and growth in vapour condensation. Kinetics of electrochemical reactions, introduction to surface phenomenon; (surface forces (contact angle, wettability and spreading of melt, capillary flow), types and structure of surfaces and interfaces in materials; friction, wear and lubrication. Adsorption, Introduction to colloids.
