LE 153 — Introduction to Building Construction

Objective Building construction is a major course in the training of the land economy graduate and will be taken in the first three years of the programme. This is an introductory course and aims at introducing the student to building construction as a subject. At the end of the course the student is expected to have a general view of the building industry and identify traditional and contemporary structural forms and relate them to their social and economic implications. Contents People concerned with buildings: the design team, construction team and approving/law enforcement authorities Preliminaries to building: Preliminary investigations and site preparation Building materials and their effect on function and design eg. Concrete, blocks, stones, timber, plywood. Economic and sociocultural consideration in design. Elements of building: Substructure – foundation types, basements, water proofing, etc. Studio Work: Introduction to draughtsmanship
