AGEX 413 — Rural Livelihoods and Food Security

The course aims at exposing students to the concepts of rural livelihoods, food security, and food insecurity, and the implications of food security on rural development. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to facilitate the selection, establishment and management of sustainable livelihood strategies for the attainment of food security by rural communities. The concept of livelihoods: the sustainable livelihood framework, Selection and management of sustainable livelihood strategies; livelihood outcomes, sustainable livelihoods and food security, measurement of food security, causes of food insecurity, Food security and rural development. Practical session: Students will visit rural communities to observe the existing livelihood assets at their disposal and existing livelihood diversification activities that they are engaged in. Students will determine the food security situations of the different categories of people (women, children, and the aged) in the selected communities.
