AGEX 414 — Sustainable Agricultural Value Chain Development

This course aims at exposing students to the usefulness of value chain thinking to commercialization of agriculture and rural development. Definition of value chain, principles of value chain approach, Objectives of value chain development. Mapping the market: Main actors, Business Development Services and the Enabling environment. Vertical and horizontal linkages in the chain. Comparative analysis of value chains for different commodities, value chain and commercialization of agriculture, Value chain and poverty reduction strategies, Role of stakeholders in value chain development, application of value chain principles to community development. Practical session: Students will visit the actors (producers, input dealers, processors, marketers, exporters, and consumers) of the main agricultural commodities and determine/observe how they perform their functions.
