Water content and water potential relationship: soil water content, soil water potential, soil moisture characteristic, concepts of field capacity, wilting point and plant available water; Movement of water through soils: Darcy‘ law, flow through layered soils, continuity equation and non-steady state flow, Darcy-Richards equation; Nutrient transport and leaching; Soil temperature and heat: sinusoidal soil temperature equation, heat flow in soils, Fourier‘s equation; Soil salinity: electrical conductivity, salinity effects on plant growth, drainage; Climatic factors affecting plant growth: radiation and energy balance, evapotranspiration, the soil water balance.
