AGEX 311 — Development Sociology

The course aims at enabling students to apply sociological concepts to understand the culture of societies and how they can work effectively with rural communities given their different cultural backgrounds. The nature of Rural Sociology and Social Anthropology; Culture of Rural Societies; the Rural community, Farm family and household, Processes involved in rural and farming change, Social change in rural communities, Methods of influencing human behaviour and Sociological factors in technology development and transfer. Practical session: Students will visit rural communities to observe existing land tenure arrangements, inheritance, taboos, superstitions, and farmer groups and discuss how the above influence agricultural and rural development.
