AGEX 316 — Climate Change and Adaptation in Agricultural Development

The purpose of this course is to train students to identify and manage climate change challenges and opportunities in agricultural development. The concept of climate change, causes and effects on natural resources, agricultural productivity, food security, and rural-urban migration, health and society in general. Mitigation and adaptation strategies and restoration activities. Measures of protecting and diversifying livelihood strategies. The role of Information and Communication Technology in Climate Change adaptation, Gender issues in Climate Change. Climate change mitigation and adaptation measures and their associated costs in Ghana. Practical sessions: Students will visit communities near areas such as beaches, rivers, streams, mountains and degraded lands to observe signs of climate change and interact with the community members to determine the types of adaptations they have employed to mitigate the effects of climate change on their livelihood. Students will elicit from community members living near beaches, rivers, streams, mountains and degraded lands their understanding of climate change.
