AGEX 415 — NGO Development and Management

The course aims at providing students with the theoretical foundations and the fundamental principles of NGO development and management. Students will acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies in: Theoretical foundations for the establishment of NGOs, Classification, NGO formation and management. Core functions, Staffing, NGOs and development theories; Understanding NGOs in historical perspectives. Gender mainstreaming in NGO development, Strengths and weaknesses of NGO action, Relationships between NGOs and Governmental Organizations, Responsibilities of stakeholders in NGO work, Financial management of NGOs, Human resource management in NGOs. Practical session: Students will visit selected NGOs to study how they manage their activities in terms of client selection, programme development, financing of programmes, staffing the NGO, and level of participation of beneficiary communities.
