SOIL 418 — Introduction to Agricultural Systems Analysis and Simulation

Systems dynamics: definition, types of systems, causal and flow diagrams. Properties and behaviour of systems: hierarchy, feedbacks, stability and chaos; Simulation and modelling of agricultural systems: methods of model construction, validating models, sensitivity analysis, models of population growth, predator-prey systems; Modelling soil and plant growth processes: carbon and nitrogen dynamics, nutrient uptake by plants, nutrient leaching, plant growth and development; Modelling pasture and animal systems. Demonstration of some soil/crop models e.g. QUEFTS and NuMAS, etc.
